Mikel Arteta yesterday had an operation on the groin injury that has put him out of form since Christmas. Usually a leading star for Everton, Arteta has suffered a poor run of form recently, and is still dogged by rumours that he will leave in the summer.

Arteta has been Everton’s player of the season for the past two seasons, with Joleon Lescott taking the award this year.
