Feeling Blue at the end of the Season?

Posted on 06 May 2008

Yes, the last eight games we have been amazingly disappointing; but we must remember, this season has gone on for fifty games, not just recent memory. Negatives have been a plenty this season, but there positives have been more positives than I can remember in recent years.

- We have (pending results this weekend) secured 5th place in the League. Not only is that an improvement on last season, but it is an improvement in an increasingly tricky market. Everton have spent a net of £15 million this year. Sunderland, Spurs, Liverpool, Man Utd, Fulham and the rest have all spent more money than us. Spurs spent massive amounts in the summer, but have ended up as mid table mediocrity. The reason? They didn’t stick by their manager. The longer we stick by Moyes, the longer we will continue to improve in the league. Money isn’t everything in the Premier League; although it is a large part of it. Part of the league success has been the amount of goals we have scored too. Most notably, the 7-1 win at home to Sunderland.

- Our trip in Europe. We had the best winning streak in Europe any team has ever had. Nine wins on the bounce, conceding only 4 goals on the way. No doubt, this is a massive improvement on our last time in Europe. We have gone from a Single flight to Paris to a round the world tour. Our impressive form in Europe stands us in great form for next seasons guaranteed trip to our fellow European Countries. Yes, we got knocked out on penalties, but did anyone really expect us to reach that stage of the UEFA Cup. For me, anything other than getting knocked out in the qualifiers would have been deemed as a success.

- Memorable Nights at Goodison. Although there was the anti-climax of the Semi-Final against Chelsea, the Goodison faithful have again shown why there are nicknamed “The Peoples Club”. The most memorable nights for me came in Europe. Both SK Brann and Fiorentina at Goodison Park were amazing matches to attend. The SK Brann match was so impressive due to the magnitude of the Everton victory. On the other hand, the pressure riding on the match against Fiorentina made for the best atmosphere I personally have felt at Goodison. The Arteta goal sent the whole Stadium wild, with the tune of “We Shall Not Be Moved” being belted out.

- Reaching the Semi-Final’s of the Carling Cup. Yes, people call it a Mickey Mouse Cup, but football is about winning trophies, and we came so close. We may not have had the hardest of matches, but only for an unfortunate Joleon Lescott own-goal we were knocked out. Had luck gone our way; James McFadden’s shot wouldn’t have it the post, and Lescott would have buried his chance in the last minute to draw level with the tie at Goodison calling.

- The emergence of Steven Pienaar & Yakubu. Another of the ITV proclaimed “Midget Gems”, Steven Pienaar has been vital to some of the “Beautiful Football” we have played this season. For most of the time, gone are the days of long ball, and or sighs as Tony Hibbert hoofs another ball down field, this season, we have played the ball on the deck and it has produced rewards. Games where we have actually looked like threatening the opposition have arrived, and Everton look to be playing with flair and skill; even without an on form Mikel Arteta. With the Yak knocking in 19 goals this season, he has become our highest goal scorer for 15 years, and needs only one more to be our top goal scorer since Gary “Walkers” Lineker, 20 years ago. A special mention should also go to Phil Jagelika, who has emerged as our second best defender behind Joleon Lescott, another shrewd bit of business from the Moyesiah me thinks.

It is not possible to argue with the fact that this has been a successful season for Everton Football Club. A semi-final, a last 32 knockout and fifth place finish in the most competitive league in the world. If you’re still feeling blue at the tail end of this season, remember, form is temporary, class is permanent.

Well said Dan and I agree with the majority of your sentiments. However, we got to the Round of 16 in the Uefa Cup ;)
