Everton 0 Oldham 1 - Match Report - FA Cup - 5/1/2008

Posted on 05 January 2008

Everton fell to their third defeat in four games, as they lost to League One outfit Oldham. The near sell out crowd cheered Everton all the way, but, as Moyes resorted to Rafa-esque tactics, by rotating his squad, Everton failed to gain a firm foothold in the game, and came crashing out the FA Cup - their first defeat in a cup all season.

Everton fielded a much weakened side. Arteta was forced out the game due to suspension, and Cahill, Howard and Yobo were all out with injuries. This made way for the likes of Gravesen and Andy Johnson, to try and cement a place in David Moyes’ first team plans. Everton played out the firs half well against an Oldham outfit who had won their last six away games. James Vaughan nearly put Everton ahead after just one minute, but his shot went glaringly wide. Oldham defended well, and went forward on counter attacks, which, all credit to them, they did well.

Their pressure paid of when in the 46th minute of the first half, Stefan Wessels was lobbed from about 25 yards out, and Everton went into the break at half time 1-0 down. All credit to David Moyes, as he stuck by the same team for the second half. But, Gravesen had is worst game in an Everton shirt (and possibly his last) as he failed to put any balls through to the strikers. Everton pushed in the last twenty minutes and brought on the Yak and Lescott, but Everton could not muster a shot on target, bar Yakubu hitting the post in the 93rd minute.

n all, a very disappointing weekend for Everton FC, but all credit to Oldham who played very well. Every Evertonian’s eyes will be on Tuesday’s game against Chelsea at Stamford Bridge, to see if Everton can recapture the form of earlier on in the season, and get a draw or a win at Stamford Bridge.
