“I will never, ever forget the Everton fans. The support I have received from the people of Liverpool is special. Everton fans are part of my blood because of the way they have stood by me. Their loyalty to me is one of the main reasons why I love Everton so much.”
The parting words of a man that was simply idolised by 95% of Evertonians. It is my genuine belief Ferguson was the reason why Everton fans got excited about watching Everton, whether he was going in for challenges , leading the team as an inspirational captain or scoring important goals.
May 2006 was when the curtain crawled in on Duncan Ferguson’s career. It was a fitting ending, you simply couldn’t write it. A script you would expect on Dream Team or Footballers Wives, Ferguson stepped up to the penalty spot in injury time, at the Gwladys Street end, fired at the goalkeeper and somehow managed to put the rebound in, cue jubilation.
What a way to end a career. It was one of those days you didn’t expect anything from but will go down in Everton folklore. I felt privileged to be at that game, by the end there were tears shed, a truly emotional experience. Perhaps such emotion sheds light on the affection towards Ferguson.
“I wasn’t aware of the history surrounding the place. Now I know about the long line of great number nines and hopefully, I can continue their reputation”.
It is well known the Everton number nine jersey is one of, if not the most significant in the league. Duncan can quite rightly say he wore that shirt with passion. I don’t care what the doom merchants say, Ferguson brought hope to our club in unenlightened, troubled times.
He fought for the cause (literally!), for the Everton fans in every game he played.
Everton still doesn’t feel the same without his presence, he is a part of “my” Everton. Yes he had his faults, and he let us down at times, but he provided us with many great times and the effect he had on the fans will never be matched nor surpassed. There’s no doubting, he will never be forgotten.
Most Evertonians have been disciples of the man, many fans not connected with the Toffees will not fathom why. Those that understand need no explanation, those that don’t, don’t matter.
Ferguson at present lives in Mallorca, he has secured the quiet life as expected. He will return to Liverpool in May to compete in the “Masters”, the reception he will get will be nothing short of incredible.
Although we are going very well at the moment, some of the best days of my life were when “Dunc” scored some of those memorable goals.
Barring the injuries and barmy refereeing decisions he was possibly the greatest centre forward I have seen play for Everton. Although Yakubu could alter my stance if he continues to fire them home!
Additionally, I can only thank Duncan for not playing for anybody else after his last game in May 2006, when he could have easily gone elsewhere for one last pay check.
A legend to many, an idol to most, an enigma to all, Duncan Ferguson.
