Everton booked their place in Europe next season with a 3-1 win against Newcastle at Goodison Park. Two goals from Yakubu and Lescott’s tenth of the season gave Everton a fantastic send off in the last game of the season.

After three bad results on the spin, Everton recorded their first win in four with a home win against bottom placed Derby County. After sharing the possession equally throughout the match, Everton won the game with a Leon Osman strike midway through the second half.

Everton gave an extremely impressive performance against a strong Manchester City side, and managed to take three points for the fortress that has been Eastlands this season. Goals from Lescott and Yakubu gave Everton a 2-0 win, and gave a massive blow to Manchester City and their hopes of a European spot.

Everton’s initial plays were cautious and defensive, with Brann having most of the possession and actually getting some shots off, while Everton sat back and soaked up the pressure. There was a call for handball against Lescott in the area but it was really more a case of ball-to-hand.

A looping header by Phil Jagielka just past the hour mark settled a keenly contested but poor game overall from Everton’s perspective and condemned Reading to a seventh-successive defeat.

Everton continued their run without scoring into a third consecutive game after a 0-0 draw at Ewood Park. Although Blackburn had the most of the possession, the offensive chances were all Everton’s, but they failed to convert. Everton thought they had won it in the 85th minute when Andy Johnson slotted home after James Vaughan seemed to chase down a lost cause, but AJ was adjudged - unfairly, to be offside.

A very depleted Everton squad managed to grab a 0-0 draw with Tottenham at Goodison Park. An amazingly dull match from two teams well known for their attacking prowess, ended in a bore draw, with Andy Johnson managing to miss the best chance of the game midway through the second half.

Everton’s great run finally came to an end in the League Cup against an extremely professional Chelsea side. Joe Cole’s 70th minute strike ended up being the difference on the night, with Chelsea winning the tie 3-1 overall. Pre-match, Everton certainly felt that a cup upset was on the cards, and this was proved by the fact it was a sell out at Goodison Park. Although Chelsea were without many of their stars, their team certainly wasn’t weak - 10 of the players were full internationals. Everton were also boosted by the news that Manuel Fernandes started, with Phil Neville dropping to right back in place of Tony Hibbert.
